Official opening of the lights on Cathy Freeman Oval

On Saturday the 10th March, Member for Mackay, Tim Mulherin officially opened the training and playing lights at Cathy Freeman Oval, Slade Point. This project has been in the pipeline for many years, and is the first stage of the redevelopment of Cathy Freeman Oval. On hand to open the lights, were Mackay Regional Councillor Paul Steindl, Club Life Member and Project Co-ordinator Peter Crowley, Slade Point Club President Graeme Lodge and major sponsors of the Project - Stew Larkings of the Northern Beaches Bowls Club, Mike Meynell of Bank of Qld, West Mackay and Greg Porter from Porters Mackay. Each of these sponsors contributed sponsorship dollars towards the project, to go along with the $50,000 grant the club received from the state government. Other local businesses who contributed their services and time to the project included: G&H Electrical Contracting, Aurecon, Holcim Concrete and Ramsamy Crane Hire. The Slade Point Rugby Union Club would like to thank all sponsors and parties involved in this project. Further plans for the club oval, include a shed and clubhouse with change rooms and shower facilities.
