Unbeaten Run Ends With Haringey Defeat
Soham’s five match unbeaten League run came to an end, losing 3-1 at home to Haringey Borough, despite taking an early lead.
The Greens came into the match one place higher than their visitors in the table, making three changes to the side which gained a late draw with Waltham Abbey on Tuesday as Lewis McDonald, Joe Tennent and Marcus Hall returned to the starting eleven.
Within thirty seconds of the kick off, Haringey came close to opening the scoring only for Fenton to fire wide of the near post. The ball was sent up-field with Foxley delivering the ball towards the back post where Ryan Sharman, who after taking a touch, squeezed his shot between Palmer and the near post. Shortly after Setirekli and Paterson cut in from the left to place just over. As the game progressed although both sides had their share of the play chances became limited until the 31st minute when Lawton failed to hold onto a left sided freekick, with the ball falling to Ross Dedman to convert. Just before the interval, McDonald fired wide from distance, before Palmer kept out Hall’s strike from Mason’s layoff with the ball being cleared before being sent back into the area only for Hall to be denied again.
Three minutes after the restart Soham were again reduced to ten men, when Marcus Hall, who had earlier been cautioned in the first half, received his second yellow card of the game. Moments later, Groves flicked on a freekick to Mason, with Palmer making a full stretch one handed save to divert the Captain’s header wide, before Borough took the lead in the 54th minute when the ball was quickly played forward with Fenton and Markus combining to play the ball across the area for David Olufemi to score. The visitors scored a third in the 63rd minute with Markus delivering a freekick into the area for Ralston Gabriel to score with an overhead kick. Within minutes Markus came close to adding a fourth only for his looped shot to come back off the bar before Sharman’s overhead kick was kept out by Palmer. Markus and Fenton both had shots wide off target before sub Asamoah made his way into the area only for his effort to come back off the near post. The Greens had one last opportunity to pull a goal back before the end however Paterson could only head over from Mason’s ball.
