Soham suffered their heaviest defeat of the season losing 6-2 to former Eastern Counties rivals Wroxham, who scored all their goals in the second half

Both sides came into the game on the back of different runs of form; Wroxham having not won in their last seven League outings, whilst Soham were again unchanged following back-to-back victories against Aveley and Erith and Belvedere.

Despite enjoying the better of the first halves play and chances, it took until injury time for Soham to find the breakthrough. The Greens started well, however it was Wroxham that had the first effort of the game after ten minutes when Wilderspin cleared Cook’s goal bound header, with Bircham making a fantastic one handed save to push away Marsden’s follow up on the line. Slowly the Greens started to get on top as Wood and Harradine had shots off target before Gent was denied by the woodwork from a Harradine freekick. As the half continued Stanley, Gent and Harradine all had good chances either over or wide whilst up the other end despite having time and space Gordon curled a shot wide of the post. However as the game entered injury time Soham took the lead as Luke Stanley received Bircham’s long kick to the left of the area to cut inside his marker and fire low under Tibbles.

It was a complete reversal of action after the break with the Yachtsman having the majority of the play and looked dangerous every time they broke and after Stanley had fired an early angled shot across goal for Soham the visitors levelled five minutes after the restart when Marsden delivered the ball over top of the defence to Stephen Drake who looped a shot between Bircham and the post. The Wroxham number ten added a second three minutes later firing in low from the edge of the area from Gordon’s ball across the front of the area. McCabe, Drake and Gordon all had half chances before Drake secured his hat trick in the 73rd minute converting Marsden’s throughball under Bircham. Substitute Ben Sawyer, who had replaced James McCabe only moments earlier, gave Soham a lifeline two minutes later firing over Tibbles from outside the area after the keeper had punched clear Harradine’s freekick from the incoming Gent. Wroxham’s four and fifth goals where fairly similar, coming after Gordon had found room down the left to deliver balls into the area with Drake finding the net again in the 76th minute and Joseph Marsden converting two minutes later from an identical position. Things got worse for the hosts with six minutes remaining when Harradine was adjudged to have pushed sub Fernando inside the box with the referee awarding a penalty, from which Sam Harty sent Bircham the wrong way. Soham had one last opportunity as the game entered stoppage time, but Simpson could only head Stanley’s ball over the bar.
