Moors earn first three points...
Solihull Moors recorded their first win of the 2019/20 season on Tuesday night, when they beat Torquay United 3-0 at the SportNation.bet Stadium.
Goals from Jamey Osborne (2) and Terry Hawkridge ensured the three points for Tim Flowers’ men, while some late heroics from Ryan Boot kept the ball out at the other end.
The result maintains the Moors’ unbeaten start, while the visitors are beaten for the first time this season after their 2-1 win against Boreham Wood on Saturday.
The Gulls got off to a quick start, and Jamie Reid should have put the visitors ahead within the opening two minutes. After some good work on the right-hand side from Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, Reid dragged the square ball wide from 10 yards out when it was easier to score.
To say the visitors would rue that missed chance would be quite the understatement.
Just a few minutes later, Moors took the lead through Osborne. The midfielder collected the ball in-stride in the middle of the pitch and chose to unleash from 25 yards out when he had options to both the right and left. It didn’t matter though, as Osborne found the right-hand corner to put the hosts in front.
Three minutes later the lead was doubled. Jamie Reckord, starting at left-back, was brought down just inside the United area, and referee Rebecca Welch didn’t hesitate in pointing to the spot.
The impressive Hawkridge stepped up to convert the kick and put the game firmly in the Moors’ control.
The away side could have got themselves back in the game before the 15-minute mark, when Liam Daly’s mishit back-pass was chased down by Reid. Just like his previous chance, the striker couldn’t find the back of the net, this time being denied by Boot in the Solihull goal.
Flowers’ side had plenty of opportunities to add some gloss to the score-line before the break, particularly striker Paul McCallum, but they finally did add to the lead on 43 minutes.
A Lee Vaughan cross into the box from the right was headed as far as Osborne, who set himself before connecting with a sweetly struck half-volley to leave the United ‘keeper stranded, and the United team in disarray.
Half-time: Solihull Moors 3-0 Torquay United
The second half was much less frantic, although Daly did come close to adding a fourth when his effort from the left-hand side of the area just evaded the far post.
United were denied a consolation fifteen minutes from time, when Boot saved well from point blank range before Alex Gudger blocked a follow-up shot moments later.
Not long after, Boot saved spectacularly from Armani Little’s late penalty to preserve the clean sheet for the Moors.
The result gives the Moors plenty of momentum heading into the weekend, when they welcome Aldershot Town to the SportNation.bet Stadium.
