We'd lost on our previous two visits, and from the kick off the home team took the game to us and strong resolute defence was required.
With a bit of possession now coming, our backs started to move through the gears, and when skipper Hewson spotted an opportunity for a trademark grubber, he executed it to perfection and the gazelle like speed of fullback Ricky Hughes raced onto it and sprinted away from the shocked home defence to dot down under the posts allowing Charlie Munro to add the extras.
We were now playing some lovely rugby, and the backs looked menacing as they surged forward and capitalised on this, as Fred Thame weaved some magic that ended with the powerful Jensen Cullen flattening the attempted home sides defence to score in the corner. The conversion was missed, but a couple of Wheats players sadly were to take no further part in proceedings.
Far from being deflated, Wheats hit back and from lovely probing by their elusive scrum half, they created a try under the posts which they upgraded.
The home team now had the wind in their sales, and we're advancing with purpose, but some great work by the forwards turned the ball over and the speed of the transition sent Charlie Munro racing away, selling more dummies than Mothercare, he drew the last man and slipped a perfect pass to Matty Stuart, who scorched to the corner for our third try of the half and despite missing the extras, we led 7-17 .
Some poor tackling led to Wheats getting back into the game just after the restart, and our lead was cut five points. It was now anybodies game, and the home sides tails were up.
However, some more more slick handling saw the ball worked wide and Jensen was there to finish off a lovely move. Wheats did not give up though, and despite looking out on their feet they created another try out of nothing thanks to their impressive scrum half. Adding the conversion now meant that there was only three points in it.
The game was swinging to and fro, hopefully our superior fitness would see us home.
In the space of five minutes, it looked as though we had sewn the game up, as Matt Taylor and Charlie Munro added two more try's, both upgraded by Charlie.
Bonus point in the bag, surely that was it, how wrong we were, Wheats hit back again, showing great determination and fight, two five pointers and a conversion and the score stood at 29-36, bonus point for the home team and back to within seven points.
This had turned into a nail biting nerve jangler, and as the eighty minute mark approached, some more enterprising play by both forwards and backs created an opportunity for towering lock James Stone to power over for his maiden try, Munro obliged with the conversion, and the final score was a 29-43 away win.
Much to be pleased about from this performance, and obviously still things to work on at training, but with player's coming back and numbers available, the season holds lot's of promise. If Wheats can maintain this appetite for the game, hopefully their season will improve, but I'm not sure what their availability will be like for the next fixture, as they were dropping like flies towards the end.
Well done to all that pulled on the Southam shirt today, some excellent entertainment was provided. Welcome to Kezia, our new physio, who certainly had a busy afternoon dealing with numerous bumps and bruises from both sides.
Next week should be a blank weekend, but we have a fixture away to Cov Welsh, more information will follow in the week.
