Southam overcome Daventry in bloody awful weather

In trying conditions of a chill wind and driving rain, Southam had it all to contend with a strong wind against them in the first half of this Senior Vase tie. The team soaked up all the pressure that the big Daventry pack through at them with solid tackling right across the team and after several forays into the Daventry 22, were unlucky to concede a penalty to give Daventry the first score. In slippy conditions Southam still moved the ball and from just inside their own half broke out through wings Bench & Thorpe and then after a few forward phases spread it wide and wing forward Urbanas crashed through only to be held up on the line, but the score was completed by a nice layoff to supporting prop Bekeris. Daventry took the last points with a well taken drop goal to finish the half at 6 - 5.

2 minutes into the second half Southam broke out from their own 22 with a and from the a scrum a piercing run from centre West got to the Daventry line and after a few recycles Gilkes snook underneath for the try 6-10.
Daventry then cam back with one a their few forays of the half into the Southam 22 and from a 5m lineout drove over for converted try.

Southam then dominated the rest of the half, but Daventry made them work hard for the points, after 10 minutes of continuous pressure, a precise backs move, gave Bench some space and he used it well, to burst through heavy traffic for the try, converted by fly half Hewson.
Southam continued the pressure and forced a penalty, taken by Hewson to put them a full score ahead. Indiscipline from Daventry gave Southam a man up and 30m advantage and a penalty for offside taken by Hewson put Southam another 3 points in front. The game was finished by a break through by Hewson, hacked on and then touched down by the the ever supporting Urbanas, converted by Hewson.

A decisive team effort from Southam with strong tackling all across the defence, fierce competition in the lineout and eventual scrum domination against a bigger and heavier Daventry unit. In the atrocious conditions, the handling was outstanding, with repeated long passes and miss moves being secured. The Southam boys must surely look forward to the next round where more like this, will please players and supporters alike.

Southam would hope for a home draw in the next round as we have not had one in this competition for 5 years.
