Southam execute a tidy game for a well deserved win

After waiting seven long weeks for this fixture all the way from Jan 5th, captain Will Grindal prepared with care and went over with half the first team to watch Edwardians play Loughborough on Wednesday night. Southam knew what to expect and played in a frame of mind that said they were there to get the job done.

Southam started at pace and straight into the Edwardians 22, forcing a penalty for holding on, converted by Grindal.
The next score was started by 2nd row James Lander, who broke from the halfway up to the 22, the ball was recycled and a precise chip by veteran scrum half Jay Ellerington, found nobody home and wing Sam Bench ran onto the bounce and around and under the posts for the try, converted by Grindal. Edwardians then got their only points with a penalty for sealing off. Ellerington was again in the play with a chip forward to the Eds 22 and on the kick chase, charged down the clearance, which was picked up and taken on by wing forward Justin Urbonas, the ball was recycled and a wide pass from fly half Harry Hewson, saw Bench go around the outside for his second, converted by Grindal. From the kick off Southam broke out from their own 22 through prop Moddy Bekeris to over the half way, the ball was recycled and spread to returning centre Tom Grimes, who cut through the middle to touch down under the posts, converted by Grindal. HT 3 - 24

The 2nd half turned in to a niggly affair with seemingly half of it taken up by reset scrums, but when the ball was available Southam continued their scoring. The first early on was from a break out by centre Will Woods, who started from his own half, and outgassed the opposition, drew the full back and fed wing Nathan Hooker who crossed for the try. At the end of the half Southam finished off with another try for Grimes, started by Urbonas, who broke from a ruck on the Eds 22, pushed off two defenders, fed Hewson who put a pass over the top well taken behind him by Grimes, who went over for the try, converted by Hewson. FT 36 - 3

A disciplined performance by the team for a convincing win, in the second half they had to contend with a niggly opposition and a pedantic referee, who refused to let the game flow, but the team showed a lot of composure and a strong defensive line to weather the events and win in style.
