Southam started the game confidently in the sun and a light wind, little knowing what was to come. Good work by forwards, regained the ball on the half and it was fed quickly to centre Grimes, who with two steps left Wheats standing and raced away for a try under the posts, converted by Grindal. As is the way, after the score Southam came off the gas and Wheats came back with a fifty meter break and after two more phases scored in the forwards. Some good lineout work by Harris, and some in their face tackling from Grimes and Burnell allowed Southam to get back up the field and with pressure ball from backs and forwrds, a solid run from Grimes, allowed him to feed Thorpe, who scored in the corner, with the sky blackening and the rain starting, the players left the field at the half at 12 - 5.
The second half started with rain teeming down, thunder and sheet lightning, the rain turned to hail, forcing the spectators to shelter,
but play continued, the sky darkened more and it looked as though the game might be stopped for light, but the sky brightened a little and the rain backed off and the game continued, the conditions were now atrocious, with the ball like a bar of soap. Southam coped with the conditions better and with some brave defence, kept Wheats at bay to finish the game, shivering, but triumphant.
D.O.R. Tim Perkin would like to add that it was one of the best second halves that he has seen at Southam and that the defence was outstanding in the atrocious conditions against the big men of OW's.
