Southam won this mid table game with a game plan of running rugby and using the wing at every opportunity and Upton also played an expansive game which resulted in an entertaining game. Southam with 6 changes from there last league game started brightly and good 3/4 handling gave speedy wing Sam Bench room to score wide out after only 3 mins. Sustained pressure by the southam forwards gave centre Tom Grimes room to draw the defence and allow co centre Millsey Thorpe to score, Will Grindal converting. Upton kept there game together and put Southam under pressure, but excellent defence by back rowers Will Lyne and James Lander repelled Upton and scrum half Jay Ellerington cleared with some great line kicking. Southam increased there lead when full back Pete Burnell dummied his way over to give Southam a half-time lead of 17-0.
Southam had the wind in there favour in the second half and took advantage with a penalty from fly half Grindal. Southam then increased there lead when the forwards won a ruck and powerful running by Matt Catterall set up Hooker Sam Bennett to score under the posts for his first try for Southam. Grindal converting 27-0. Upton then had a lock sent off and this seemed to stir them into playing some decent rugby and they quickly scored two tries. Southam lost prop Will Bostock with a leg injury, but Southams forwards rallied and another fluent move when Grimes fed Burnell, who gave wing Tom Wright room to score in the corner. Upton scored another try wide out, before Southam sealed the game when powerful sub Mitch Brown crashed over to give Southam a deserved win, gaining revenge for there defeat over in Upton when Southam had 12 first teamers away on a stag weekend. Never used to happen in season !!!!
For Southam flanker Will Lyne was outstanding in defence and Dave Harris and James Lander were dominant in the line out and full back Pete Burnell was the pick of the backs.
