The Cavaliers welcomed the Southampton Spitfires to North Hinksey for the first home game of the 2018 season. The Cavaliers with a number of changes from last week including Player coach Luke Evans, experienced half back Louis Richards and Big Benny Davies who was up north playing for the Army.
The Cavaliers started like last week and after conceding two penalties back-to-back Southampton made the pressure count to score an early try to make it 4-0 after 4 minutes. When the Cavaliers finally got their hands on the ball they looked very dangerous with Rees Goggs on debut almost going the length of the field. The pressure that Oxford finally produced provided dividends when captain Arron Lambourne once again went over for the Cavaliers first try of the game he added the extra two points off the boot to put the Cavaliers 6-4 up. The Cavaliers continued building pressure and once again were rewarded this time with Robert Tyreman going over after stepping three Southampton players the extras where missed. Just five minute later the Cavaliers scored again this time Brookes Bulls Rees Goggs going over in the corner to make the score 14-4. Southampton finally got the ball in the Oxford half and after some big runs from their big pack they were rewarded with another try yet again missing the kick. It was a hat trick of debut try’s when James Jones went over in what was not only his first game for the Cavaliers but his first game of Rugby League. With 1 minute left of the first half the cavaliers went for a set play off the scrum as captain Lambourne looked one way and sent the ball the other way into the hands of big Freddie Myatt to walk under the post, Lambourne added the extras to make the score 24-8 at half time.
The second half started with both teams making a number of mistakes and as a result the game did not move out of the middle third for 10 minutes. Southampton were the first to get on the front foot and after a number of mistakes from the Cavaliers Southampton scored in the corner the kick was missed and score stood 24-12 to the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers finally got on the front foot and forced Southampton deep into their own half as they tried to play out, Rees Goggs went over for his second try of the game after intercepting a Southampton pass for an easy run in, Lambourne added the extras to give the Cavaliers a 30-12 lead. Thinking the game was won the Cavaliers took their foot off the gas and let southamton back into the game with the away team scorning three quick try’s getting two conversions making the score 30-28 to the Cavaliers. With five minutes left Southampton thought they had gone over for a try that would of put them in front only for the Referee to call it back for a forward pass. This let off seemed to spur on the Cavaliers and after getting back into the game they scored the last try of the game when Tyreman went over for his second try, Lambourne adding the extras to make it 36-28 at fulltime.
