Spitfires v Aldershot in the Barry Watson Memorial Match

A great masters game played in awful conditions
- Glenn Tyreman (Head Coach)

On a rain drenched pitch two masters sides played a thrilling encounter at the Barry Watson Memorial Match.

The first quarter was a tight affair with both sides playing controlled football due to the wet and slippy conditions. Both sides had good field position but neither was able to capitalise. The Spitfire's came closest when half back Tyreman found Dave Wilson on a short ball but Wilson was unable to take in the ball. A try was possibly on the cards had the ball stuck.

The second period was all the spitfires with Aldershot making error after error allowing the visitors excellent field position. Great forward work by Powley, Stokes and Still took the Spitfires into the redzone where Hooker Benjy Leach found Tyreman who linked up with second receiver Pascal Garrard who was able to find some space to squeeze in past a couple of defenders to score. This was to bit Garrard's last big contribution to the game as he had to leave the field injured. The Spitfires almost double the lead when great hands out wide saw Wilson set Andy Pullar free on the wing. Pullar was unable to keep control of the ball and a certain try was lost.

The third quarter continued in the same fashion as the second with the Spitfires having plenty of good ball on the back of Aldershot's mistakes which were forced by the excellent edge defence and sliding of outside backs Jason York, Andy Pullar and John O'Shea. A clean break by Tyreman on the back of quick ball saw him feed full back Bingley who was brough down just 10 meters out. From the next play Leach found debutant John O'Shea who broke a few tackles and offloaded to Bingley who crashed over from 5 meters out leaving the Spitfires well in control going into the last quarter. The spitfires continued to cause the home side problems in the last few minutes with excellent forward work and a precise kicking game making the hosts play out from deep.

With a two try lead Spitfires only needed to keep defending well and carry on with the high completion rate. However the visitors lost some composure as forced off loads and loose carry's let the home side back into the game and a missed tackle out wide let Aldershot score out wide. The visitors then had a chance to score again after a Wilson interception but the Spitfires once again forced an offload losing the advantage. Another loose carry in the Spitfires own red zone saw the home side crash over from close range matching the Spitfires two try's and ending the game a 0-0 draw.

Spitfires Star Man - Tim Powley who ran hard all night and causes the home sides defence countless problems with his probing runs and clean breaks.
