End of Season Match Report

Too many errors in our own half proved to be costly.
- Head Coach Tyreman

Aldershot & Fleet Masters made the short journey down the M3 to play the Solent Spitfires in their last match of the season. After a Reef laying and a minutes silence the teams were ready for action. Newly self appointed Captain Pete Stokes led the team in handshakes then it was time to kick off.

AF Master struck first after a tight opening ten minutes when they spun the ball wide to their elusive winger who outpaced the edge defence to score their first try. The Spitfires then started to apply pressure with full back Silas Bingley returning the ball deep into AF territory time and time again. Both sides completing sets of six until AF masters made an error handing the ball to the Spitfires in the red zone. Some good forward work allowed Scrum Half Tyreman to attack the line and he broke through untouched to score under the posts making the game 1-1 at the end of the first period.

The second period was equally tight with both teams trying to unlock the defences but it as AF Masters who stuck next with a missed tackle centre field. Stokes and Silas rallied back to tackle but the next play saw the Spitfires short handed allowing AF masters to score making it two try's to 1. The Spitfires almost scored just before half term when Tyreman again looking busy on the edge put Stokes into a whole but the second rower was tackled just 3m short of the try line followed by the ref calling half time.

The third period saw the Spitfires loose focus as numerous errors coming out of their own half coupled with lazy defence saw the AF Masters winger run into two more try's and some more tired defence allowed the AF prop to break through meaning the visitors had 5 try's to celebrate. The Spitfires worked hard and made several half breaks but could not find support to finish off the try's

The final period saw the Spitfires coming back to life after a double injury below. Spitfires first lost second row stokes to a nasty dislocated finger and then centre Kilby also had to leave the field of play with a finger injury after some great defensive work out wide. Half back Tyreman as usual was looking to find holes in a tiring defence and he cleverly spotted a lazy blind side. A lovely run from the open to blind side and a great pass from hooker Garrard saw Tyreman create a break. With the AF defence closing in he pulled of a basketball style pass to second rower Tim Powley who crashed over.

More excellent forward play from the Spitfires including several half breaks from Prop Forward Kev Verity allowed the Spitfires into the red zone. Tyreman again playing out wide found flying winger Andy Puller with a great miss out pass over the second row and centre. But no sooner had he touched down than the try was ruled out for a tackle on Tyreman. More pressure from the home team again forced an error and from the next set of six second rower Powley again crossed to score the Spitfires third and final try and the referee signalled for full time.

Game Star - Kevin Verity returned to prop with a powerful running game and fierce tackling.

Play of the Day - Tyreman's try in the first period was the pick of the bunch.

Final Score 0-0
