Sean Day & Neil Maud on board for 2014...

All-rounder Sean Day, who was with Chudleigh last season, has committed to South Devon CC for the year ahead writes Conrad Sutcliffe

Day took 31 wickets at a little more than 10 runs each last season and averaged 37 with the bat as Chudleigh cruised to runners-up spot in the B Division and promotion.

Also on his way to Marsh Road is Alphington's bowling all-rounder Neil Maud, a former team-mate of new South Devon captain Ali Wright when the pair played together for Long Ashton CC in Bristol.

Maud bowls right-arm seamers and, according to Wright, 'hits quite big' with the bat.

South Devon already have former Devon captain Neil Hancock on board this season having signed him from Premier Division neighbours Bovey Tracey.

And Henry Cupitt, an opening bowler from Australia, is due to arrive in the first week of May.

"His flight is booked and we expect him to be in here in time to play against Alphington in our second game," said Wright.

Two players who didn't feature last season – spinner Matt Coult and batter Aron Owen – have departed for Exmouth and Abbotskerswell respectively.

Wright hasn't ruled out another signing or two before the season starts as players have been sounding out the club about joining.

"One player has told me he will be at our nets this week to have a chat about joining us and he seems keen to become part of what we are trying to achieve," said Wright.

South Devon, one of the oldest clubs in the county and founder members of the Devon Senior League in 1972, have had a tough couple of years.

Having been promoted into the A Division in 2011, they were relegated out of it in 2012 and went straight through the B Division last season without winning a game.

South Devon have been working hard to build a youth system capable of supporting the club at a higher level.

And the active recruitment policy during the winter shows South Devon are serious about their adult cricket this season.
