Tupman unlucky to miss out on a ton | Four-wicket haul for lively Spicer

'That's four wins from five now and suddenly we're looking upwards rather than over our shoulders'
- Matt Kitto – 2nd XI skipper
DON’T be surprised to see South Devon 2nd XI make a late push for promotion from the F Division West after they racked up another win.
Matt Kitto, the team captain, is too long in the tooth after more than 30 years with the club to get too carried away.
After beating Kingsbridge 2nd XI by six runs, even cautious Kitto is starting to wonder what might be possible.
“That's four wins from five now and suddenly we're looking upwards rather than over our shoulders,” said Kitto.
Torquay (19.5pts) have probably done enough already to claim a promotion slot. Teignmouth & Shaldon (17.29) are second with South Devon fifth on 14.25 points.
Opener Jonty Tupman might have pressed his case for a first-team recall with 90 in South Devon’s total of 228 for six. Ian Shepherd (31) and David Lear (21) were the chippers-in.”
“Jonty played a very good opener's innings and it was a shame he fell short of a ton trying to push it on for the team,” said Kitto.
Kingsbridge went for the runs despite interruptions from David Spicer (4-40) and Lear (2-4) and got down to the last over needing 15 to win with two wickets in hand.
Spicer picked up a wicket with his third legal ball and two singles then a boundary left Kingsbridge seven runs short of victory.
Rakesh Gheravada (56) and super veteran Clive Clark (39) were Kingsbridge’s leading performers with the bat.
“Kingsbridge had a couple of partnerships which had us concerned, but Dave Spicer and the other bowlers all held their nerve when it was needed,” said Kitto.
