With the shadow of a possible second lockdown looming large over the weekend, S&B Ladies 2s took to the pitch determined to enjoy what may yet prove to be their last match for some time.
“Let’s make this one count” was the rallying cry from captain Naomi Barker.
In an entertaining first half, Crostyx snatched an early goal, and soon added a second for a 2:0 lead heading into the break, and seemed on course to close out a deserved win.
However, with a half-time regrouping and passionate team talk, S&B returned rejuvenated and seemingly determined to turn the tide of the match.
With a passionate performance from the entire team, S&B gradually found a footing in the match. When Barker’s shot at goal was magnificently deflected from winger Georgia Middleton, S&B halved the deficit, and found an ever growing confidence that they could restore parity.
With attack after attack building, and ever faster and smoother passages of play, S&B struck their second, with Barker placing a reverse strike neatly into the bottom right corner. And, with a resolute defensive display closing out each and every Crostyx attack, the game hung in the balance waiting for one final moment of brilliance.
The midfield battle was to and fro, before eventually S&B overpowered the opposition, the ball was driven forward, and Barker was once again in a position to strike. A third goal, a miraculous comeback, and a richly deserved win for the S&B 2s.
And whilst a temporary national lockdown might interrupt this hockey season, S&B Ladies 2s head into any break full with confidence and encouragement — excited by the prospect of building on this win, and reaching ever higher up the league table.
