Both teams started well on a better weather than expected Saturday afternoon, however chances were few for the first 15 – 20 minutes with the centre being crowded with players. Southend & Benfleet 4s began to dominate the match half way through the first half when they began to spread the ball a little wider giving themselves more space in the middle. Towards the end of the first half a great goal chipped in the net by Liv Rutter put S&B on their way.
Second half was very much one-way as chance after chance was created with the two attacking inside half players, Anna Tutton and Niamh Onslow linking up well with the centre midfield of Charlotte and Aileen Smith. As the second half went on there was concern that the finish was not quite going to happen. Yet in the space of 10 minutes 3 quick tap ins from Codie Rowney (voted Player of the match ) made sure the honours went to the Home side.
More goals could have been scored during the 2nd half with a missed yet brave-to-take penalty flick and more clinical finishing, but to notch up 4 against any Chelmsford side is a great result. In training the team will continue to improve its decisive short corner plays and spreading the ball wider. With this and its ever strengthening and more confident defence it could be the start of a strong season for the 4’s. Well done.
