An unfamiliar home game held at the Sweyne Park School, coupled with sheets of fine English torrential rain could have led to a potential upset for the Southend & Benfleet 4’s. However from the outset the ladies encamped themselves in the oppositions half up until the break. Attempt after attempt went begging, until eventually Lulu Johnson coming on as super sub, broke the deadlock with a definitive strike on goal. 1 – 0.
As the game restarted and the wind and rain continued to drain the energy from the players, so did the standard of play. A few uncomfortable moments when the team were unable to hammer home their advantage, meant the well-weathered supporters braving the game were beginning to get nervous. As the game drew to a close, and the weather began to lighten so did the mood of the players. The ladies continued to pressure until on the final whistle a last short-corner to the home side was awarded. With the last play of the game a well swept up opportunity by Chelsea Parker, returning from University, struck the final blow. A well-deserved win, which could have, and should have, resulted in a better score line.
Stand out player, Emillie Burton was named player of the match by her peers. Well done.
As we go into the lockdown break, the team should keep up their fitness as well as their aspirations to climb the league, to ensure the winning streak continues on our return.
Keep safe and well.
