Last season the two teams drew 0-0 at Forsyth Barr Stadium which has aided to their three-year unbeaten run at the venue.

However, the team may be slightly more apprehensive this season with Team Wellington doing so well and based off the not so favourable result earlier this season.

Team Wellington put on an impressive performance which saw them win 6-1 at the start of December 2019 but attacking midfielder Ben Wade explained that the team are staying open minded ahead of the match.

He said: “I think the result earlier in the season will be in the back of people’s minds a little but we know we are a tough team to travel down to and get points from so I don’t think it will sway too heavily one way like they did earlier in the season.

“I think the run that we are on means that the result could be similar to last seasons or better. I think the confidence could be slightly more on our side. I think this being the one game of the season in the stadium we will definitely want to put on a good performance for the fans” Wade added.

Southern’s last game two weeks ago saw them pick up all three points with a late 4-3 win over Hawkes Bay United. Wade made his first start of the year in that game and reflected positively on not just his own performance but the team’s.

He said: It was my first start this year so it was good to get back out there despite the hot conditions up North but I thought it went well. I think we created most of the chances in the first half that we didn’t finish and we thought going up there is would be a win-able game.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s game and Wade is feeling positive. He said: “I think I can bring a strong work rate to the team again this weekend which is important against a team like Team Wellington. I think running onto the ball is more my game so hopefully we can use that positively this weekend.

“Playing in the stadium is some experience, it’s louder and the thrill of playing in such a big stadium on a grass pitch with no variables so it just comes down to whoever is better on the day and it’s always enjoyable,” explained Wade.

Southern versus Team Wellington kicks-off at 4pm on Saturday 14 March at Forsyth Barr Stadium. You can enter at Gate E from 3:30pm and a gold coin donation.
