Southern Women play Capital in their last game of the 2019 National Women’s League season.

After an impressive performance against Auckland last week, which saw them draw 1-1 at Logan Park Turf, Southern will look to continue their consistent playing style this weekend.

Women’s Head Coach Ignacio Sande was happy with his team’s performance last weekend. He said: “We are happy with the attacking opportunities we created against Auckland. We have three 1v1 situations in front of the goalkeeper which is not always easy to create against the top teams.”

However, regardless of it being his team’s last game of the campaign, in which they have guaranteed fourth place, Sande has areas he hopes to see his team improve prior to their game against Capital this Saturday.

“We need to work on our finishing. We need to capitalise the chances we create. This season we missed too many goals in front of the goalkeeper, and it is one of the reasons why we are out of the final,” Sande explained.

“The other is our capacity to keep the ball, we need to improve the decision making, passing accuracy and support movements as we are giving the ball away too quick,” he added.

Despite being Capital 4-2 at home earlier in the season, Sande knows that this weekend is not a guaranteed three points.

“Capital are a brave team who are not afraid to take risks and go for the game. We need to make sure we are well organised in the middle,” said Sande.

While the final game of the season is still important to Sande and his team, he does not see it to be the game that reflects the whole season. He said: “It would be great to finish the season with a win, but we can’t reduce the season to the last game.

“If we win or if we lose, in both cases there are things to improve for the next season, and there are lots of success to celebrate. The team is slowly growing year by year and there are lots of things that we are doing right,” Sande added.

Their game kicks-off on Saturday 30 November at 11am at Petone Memorial Park.
