Southern United and Team Wellington put on an entertaining display but found clear-cut chances tricky to carve out. In-form front-man Garbhan Coughlan came closest to breaking the deadlock for Southern in acrobatic fashion, sending a bicycle kick just wide of the post.
Team Wellington came off a 2-2 draw against Tasman United under controversial circumstances, while Southern earned a resounding 3-1 win against Hamilton Wanderers.
The reigning Oceania champions held much possession of the ball, but it was Southern that had the bigger chances, as Abdulla Al-Kalisy's effort off a rebound from Garbhan's shot was saved on the line, Markus Fjørtoft not being able to convert from close range off a freekick, as well as Coughlan's aforementioned strike.
An approach predicated on defensive solidity laid much of the groundwork for Southern in the game, as Team Wellington's attacking options had proved challenging when the teams met in Wellington. While the visiting side was able to enjoy possession in Southern's half, most notably in the second half, there were no gilt-edged chances for the side, as Southern defended resolutely. Team Wellington's biggest chance came in the second half, as a cross found Jack Henry-Sinclair back post but his header was hit wide.
Southern were able to ride the pressure, earn themselves a well-earned point and continue their good form at the stadium. It was a pleasing performance for the team and fans alike, as Southern look to make strides towards the deep-end of the season.
Southern will be back at Forsyth Barr Stadium next Sunday, as they host Waitakere United. We hope to see you there!
