A good start to our league campaign.

Southgate start with Stevenage Win

With our campaign starting away from the Walkerground we piled into cars and made our way to Stevenage optimistic for the new season, with the core of the team that made last season’s Cup final and new additions in Phil, Richard & Scott we knew we had the ability to make waves in this promoted league.

Captain Kieran laid down the expectation for this game prior to kickoff that despite previous results against Stevenage we were the better team and that now was the time to prove it. For the first 20 minutes we did just that, good work from the forwards at the breakdown and the running from the backs had us up 12-0 with Kieran & Fletch getting the tries. After that good spell the referee’s interpretations at the breakdown had us pinned back to defend our 22, with him continuing to call penalties on us the ref finally brandished a yellow card on Taff who happened to be in the wrong place at the at the wrong time and us rethinking our actions in and around the ruck. HT 12-5

After giving us a dressing down at half time, we started quickly letting our Rugby do the talking with a score not long after the restart. It also saw us start to utilise our driving maul off the lineout to good effect scoring and setting up 2 tries off the back of it. Individual performances didn't go amiss either with Matt & Taff working the opposition backline hard with Taff picking up a hat-trick of tries, with Scott & Peter leading the way for the forwards as well. With only a few minute left, play got a bit messy and the ref had one more part to play calling an infringement at the breakdown once again, he chose to show a red card to Scott, this was the only real disappointing aspect of our second half performance. FT 41-12

Many thanks to those who showed up to support & shout out to Stav for running things on the touchline during the game. Next week’s local derby is away to Gramms.
