Chesham 43 – 7 Southgate
There are at least two things I can take from the game over the weekend. One is that Sam hates playing in the Centres and Two, sticking a scrum cap on winger seems to give them magic rugby playing abilities (but I’ll elaborate later).
Coming off the high of the win the previous week we hoped to go away to Chesham with the same intent, unfortunately due to other commitments we found ourselves turn up with just 14. Due to the shyness in numbers we had to reconfigure our backline which saw Shane and Sam playing outside their preferred places in the forwards and though we were short in number, we still knew that so long as we played our game we could come away with a result.
The first half saw us produce some of our most consistently cohesive rugby so far this season, we laid siege to the Chesham 22 and tryline for a good half an hour with our attacking met with an equally determined Chesham defence. Our set pieces continue to show dominance as we managed to push around Chesham scrum and panic their lineout as well. Great composure from our half back pairing of the day Alex and Leo saw them utilising all avenues of attack, bossing the forwards and allowing for Eoghan and Stefan to attack with a bit of width. Despite all the initiative we showed we reaped no reward, Chesham’s counterattack on the other hand had them scoring two try’s prior to the end of the half as fatigue was setting in and gaps began to appear.
The second half is a different matter we began to lapse in basic skills and Chesham capitalised due to it, exceptional last man tackles from Leo and Shane kept them from causing more damage as they made the mistakes pay. Despite seeing the scoreline escape us we still made efforts to score and regain the composure that had us dominate the open half hour’s exchanges, this burst came in the last 5-10 minutes as we steadily made gains into the Chesham half tight lines and strong running from everyone saw us make yards. Our reward for the day’s effort came with the final play of the game as we retained possession on a scrum that was 5 metres out that worked the opportunity for Sam to crash over.
Great credit to the boy’s that battled on for 80 minutes with exceptional note to Leo who stepped in to play fly half today, Shane who put a shift in outside of his preferred position, Joel who showed great courage on debut (and put in a nice little chip & chase that helped lead to our try) and Stefan who put in some big hits and equally big carries whilst sporting his new head guard. Also, credit to Chesham for lending players to keep the game even.
We now look towards our next fixture at home against Barnet.
