Southgate narrowly lost out with the final kick of the game in a closely fought contest against Welwyn last weekend.
Having started the season with a 28-27 win the previous week against Old Millhillians, Southgate were on the wrong end of an 8-6 reverse despite leading 6-5 going into the final moments of the match.
The visitors had started well, attacking their hosts tryline with purpose and were rewarded within ten minutes with a close-range penalty attempt duly converted by fly-half Adam Seagroatt to give Southgate a 3-0 lead.
With the Southgate forwards, led by new captain Nick Watson, in typically dominant form it looked as if it would be a case of ‘by how many’ not ‘if’ a victory was on the cards. But it was the home side that crossed the whitewash first, with a handful of slipped tackles costing Southgate dear as Welwyn’s elusive backs broke from their own half to take a 5-3 lead.
In what was a niggly contest throughout, Southgate piled in with the tackles, Sam Hart delivering some fearsome hits along with fellow backrower Shane Langan, not to mention prop Jack Stapleton who was typically consistent throughout.
Although taking the lead 6-5 on the hour mark (again through Seagroatt), indiscipline (and those slipped tackles) would cost Southgate dear with two players receiving yellow cards and then conceding a penalty right at the death. With Welwyn finally finding someone who can kick the ball, they slotted it over to secure a tight 8-6 win.
After the game, Southgate rued missed chances but with plenty of potential on the field, they’re still sure to be title contenders for the season ahead.
