1’s in the Mood for Runs

The 1st team made our way up the A1 on Saturday to kick off the season against Stevenage. Having lost the toss and been asked to field, runs were being conceded at an alarming rate before Raja Abrar (2-71) made the breakthrough with his first delivery trapping the batsmen leg before.

Connor Johnson (2-64), one of our new additions to this season’s side then picked up two quick wickets and with two more dismissals before the drinks break we were in comfortably in charge with Stevenage 130-6. With Anthony Morris (4-34) cleaning up the lower order and leaving the opposition 186-9 tea was fast approaching…….or so we thought!!

With a mixture of dropped catches and poor concentration the wheels began to fall off and Stevenage put on 103 for the last wicket leaving us a mammoth 290 to win!

Alex Flett (69no) and Craig Lyte (60) got the innings off to a flying start before Lyte was dismissed with the score on 109 off just 15 overs. Alex then supported Tariq Mahmood (119no) who set about destroying the bowling attack and completing his hundred from only 63 balls. At the midway point of our innings we were well ahead of the run rate and sitting pretty at 176-2. Confidence started to grow on the boundary and with both Alex and Tariq now well set the result was never in doubt (even though the nervous skipper would hear none of it from his teammates!) A superb partnership of 171 saw us reach our target with 16 overs to spare and the celebrations ensued. A great start to the season for the boys, who never doubted we could chase down such an imposing total.

The 1st team host Cheshunt this coming Saturday.
