The 2s got the season up and running with a home game against our friendly rivals Little Berkhamsted Sahibs.
On his debut as 2nd XI captain, Tom Flint won the toss, elected to bat and Euan Ferguson and Mike Cox faced up to the new ball. Some early swing troubled us, but some nice shots and good running from the openers saw us to a steady start before Cox was adjudged to be lbw. if DRS was available Mike would definitely have sent this one upstairs.
Another wicket followed soon after and our good start was in danger of slipping away. But a good partnership from Euan (29) and Flint (44) put us back in the driving seat. Then came a vital spell for Berko, Barrell taking 4 for 44 including 4 of the top 6: Euan; Flint; debutant Sam Green and vice-captain Ben Hammond.
It was left to man of the moment in pre-season Eddie Cox to rescue us again, keeping up his batting form with a fine if sometimes fortunate 44. He was joined by Hugh Donnelly who made a run-a-ball 28 to put us into a commanding position, with Ellis Heath adding 14 vital runs at the end as we finished on 198-9.
Early wickets would be required to defend our score, newly promoted Berko have a strong top order and Finian Gibson along with Hugh Donnelly (2-24) kept them quiet. Ellis replaced Fin and his in-swinging left arm overs bamboozled the opposition as he claimed our first 5-fer of the league season. With his brother Ollie Heath picking up 2 for 9 up the other end we wrapped the game up inside the 25th over.
A top all round performance with a youthful team including 8 former colts, and we look forward to taking these positives into next week and beyond.
Man of the Match: Ellis Heath (14 no and 5-10)
