The club was formed in 1885, just after the colliery was sunk. No records have survived of the early days but the first record of the club playing a competitive match was in the FA Cup in season 1905/06. Having won their early round matches they were drawn away at Bishop Auckland in County Durham in the 4th Qualifying Round. Old newspaper cuttings show that 2 trains took players and spectators direct from Moorthorpe Station to the North East. In today's terms this would have been in the 2nd Round proper. The match however was lost 1-0 and Bishop Auckland drew Wolverhampton Wanderers, a first division club, at home in the next round.
The next time the club played in the FA Cup was in the 1929/30 season but no records can be found of any results that season. Between 1945/46 and 1954/55 they played every season in the competition but never progressed past the 3rd qualifying round. In all the club has played 99 FA Cup matches, but due to changes in FA Standards the club at present would not be allowed to enter the competition.
Over the years the club has played in various leagues. In the early years the team played in the Sheffield Association League but again no records survive. Since this time the club have played in the Doncaster League, Barnsley League, and Yorkshire League and at present play in the County Senior League. The club has also had many Sunday teams and junior sides and at the start of this season saw South Kirkby Juniors FC join the Colliery set up so that we now have 3 senior Saturday sides, a Sunday side and 4 junior teams from U8s to U16s.
The highest league position every recorded for the club was in season 1933/34 when they were runners up in the Yorkshire League, when the next step was the Football League.
Football has been played on this ground since 1929 when the old ground next to the Colliery was needed for tipping. Floodlights were erected in 1998 and since then many local Semi-Finals and Finals have been held on the ground. Since 2005, a League Cup Semi Final has been played on the ground every season.
The club are the holders of the Doncaster & District FA Cup which they have won for the last 2 seasons.
When the club was formed the colours were Red & Green halves but over the years many different colours have been worn. However, the club colours are now Blue and White but in different formations depending on styles available.
