First tournament of a brand new season for the brand new SLRFC under 10s squads

First tournament of a brand new season for the brand new SLRFC under 10s squads, still bearing their old colours but raring to prove to everyone that they are at home in the new surroundings...two teams, mixed fortunes.

The squad playing on the eastern pitch faced tough games against the Market Harborough Mischiefs losing out 6-0, and then Lutterworth Bs 5-0. Some pride was restored through a 1-0 triumph over Long Buckby Bs thanks to a familiar blistering turn of pace from Finn Turner. That put the team through to the fourth placed final where an undeservedly heavy price was paid for the day’s toil in a big loss to a very committed Market Harborough Rascals team.

Better fortune for the team playing to the west with a straightforward 3-0 win over Long Buckby As including a magnificent team try for the second, taken at pace on the overlap by Jack Vernum. Up next a clearly talented Lutterworth A team who had just fought themselves to a stalemate against the Rascals but who had little answer to the offload fast paced rugby coming at the them from all sides, and to a dominant South Leicester scrum. The third game was therefore the league decider, against the Rascals who again were outgunned in open play with South not making the most of the possession but nonetheless running out 3-1 winners and into a first placed final against the Mischiefs.

As a tense game ebbed and flowed with Harborough very dominant in the ruck but South running the ball well and deep into the opposition territory, only to be stopped by some fine tackling, and as a series of half chances for South Leicester came and went, to the obvious despair of some enthusiastic supporters, temperatures rose on the pitch and the game became more physical and unrestrained. The emotional crescendo was reached in the final few seconds when everyone connected with South Leicester (Lions) was convinced Sebby B-B had gone over for the winning try, only for it to be ruled out for a touchline infringement on the other wing moments before. Honours even, a trophy shared: a fair result to an excellent game of rugby which bodes well for others this season.
