Aussie Sean Nesbitt blasts Milford into round 2 of the Senior Evening Cup.

A perfect evening for cricket saw newcomer Sean Nesbitt’s most impressive performance to date. Almost single handed he saw Milford to a 10 wicket win over local rivals Saxton in the first round of the Senior Evening Cup.

Milford won the toss and for once we had a pretty strong team for a mid-week cup match. Andy Clark and Steve Winspear opened the bowling and though Andy seemed to struggle with the restricted run up the evening matches impose Steve was once again showing the fine form he has been in right from the start of the season. Both took wickets in their second overs. Steve thankful to an amazing one handed catch by Paul Hebden, doing wicketkeeping duties for the evening. I think the most surprised by the catch was Paul himself who kept staring at the ball in his glove almost as if he couldn’t believe it was actually in there.

None of the Saxton batsmen could seem to hang around to make a partnership form, all the Milford bowlers picking up wickets. Dan Ward getting two in his 1st over, Elmer Gee & Sean Nesbitt one apiece and Joe Barr cheekily getting a LBW with the last ball of the innings. Saxton closing on 93 all out.

That total didn’t look enough and when Sean Nesbitt, opening the batting, hit 10 off Danny Walsh’s first over it seemed we were in for an early night. Sean continued in the same vein, boundaries coming almost every ball. He also seemed to get a crafty single the last ball of the over to pinch the strike from his batting partner Martin Bramley.

Sean’s only bit of luck came when he was on 27 when he was dropped by Phil Chauston racing in to cover point trying to reach a top edge. This was the only chance Sean gave and by the time the 50 partnership was reached in the 8th over Martin had scored just 3. Sean’s half century came off 37 balls and then accelerated even more. His last 6 almost reaching Bob Kirton’s back garden. By the time we crossed the winning line he had moved on to 71 from just 42 balls (7 fours & 5 sixes). Martin had managed to get a little of the strike at the end and hit the winning four to finish 15 not out.

So an easy win for the 1st teams first taste of cup cricket this year. In the next round we will play Garforth Parish Church who beat Crompark. As we are the away team that has saved us a long trip to the other side of Leeds.
