A Vegan Chocolate Cake !!! is this the final frontier ?

Our second home match of the season this week and the turn of Matty Paul to do the teas. Flushed with his man of the match performance last week we were expecting great things of him. Even his girlfriend had put her glasses on this week so she could see him.

Things looked promising as the boxes and tubs appeared. Tuna sandwiches, check. Little sausages, check. Mini pork pie, check. All the usual favorites. But what is this home baked cakes... umm looks interesting.

A polite enquiry on what we had to look forward to revealed a white chocolate and raspberry flapjack and a vegan chocolate cake. Lovely.

Hang on, pardon can you repeat the last bit. Vegan, err wasn't Mr Spock in Star Trek vegan ?

Oh he was apparently VULCAN....

So what's the difference between a normal chocolate cake and a vegan one then ? No eggs or milk of course. Instead we have rape seed oil to make it moist and a dash of baking powder to help it rise.

Well I’m nothing but adventurous, once had Quoin mince (by mistake). Last time I buy chilli off some running chap called Mo, so I will try a bit. Not bad at all, in fact I think if you hadn't mentioned the V thing I would never have guessed. (the flapjack was better though......)

Yes I have gone on a bit about a cake but the match was a bit of a disappointment. The weather was grey and overcast to start with a hint of rain in the air but soon cleared and by the end of the game the sky was clear and a beautiful evening was in prospect.

Our captain won the toss for the first time this season and chose to bat. The team looked a little light on bowling with both Steve Winspear and Sean Nesbitt missing but Harry Jackson was playing his first game of the year which bolstered the attack a bit.

Sadly the batting really failed to spark, supposedly we should bat down to 10 (sorry Dan Ward but even you have to admit your not a batsmen) but although we had four batsmen getting into the 20's none went on to make a decent score. As a result we were all out for 145 inside 39 overs. Not really a great score on a hard flat track with a lightning fast outfield.

Best bowling for Barwick, yep sorry it was Barwick in Elmet we were playing today, was their proper overseas Aussie, Mitchell Cullen with 4 for 23. He took the vital wickets and when not bowling constantly encouraged his team from the boundary. Rob Nicholls backed him up with 3 for 31.

If we were going to stand any chance of defending 145 we needed to strike early and Dan White claimed both Barwick openers to leave them 18 for 2. Getting caught for just 4 by Harry Jackson finally shut up Cullen.

Harry had a great day in the field with 3 catches the star been a low down reflex effort. Still that wasn't enough and Lee Storey batted well along with Rob Nicholl to take Barwick into three figures. Storey finishing with the best of the day 60. Once he was out Bruce Duncan led the Barwick innings and quickly knocked off the remaining runs to finish 21 not out and give Barwick a 4 wicket win.

A comprehensive win and if we want to finish in the top 6 this season we need to pull our fingers out. We need to run teams like Barwick and Old Leos a lot closer if we are going to hit our aim of improving on last years finishing position.

Enough doom and gloom, so what else can you do vegan ? Not had a scone yet this season for tea but surely that would be sacrilege........
