Derby Day Defeat

Missed penalty proves costly in local Hesketh derby
Bank Holiday Monday saw Southport Hesketh entertain Hesketh Bank in a local derby day clash.
With both teams having a very similar start to the season, this game, as all previous ones would suggest it would have been a battle more than a football game.
Liam Boden returned in goal with Ben Jackson given his first start of the season alongside Joe Savin, Craig Massam & Jimmy Green at the back 4. With Luke Smith & Brad Shearwood absent, David Brooks & Simon Hill returned to the midfield with Paul Garrett keeping his place. Conor Wright & Jordan Gregg were joined upfront with Jesse Dowling.
The game started fairly bright for Southport, plenty of possession and to be fair Hesketh Bank played this well. Knowing how good a football team we are, allowed us to play without causing too much worry on goal. Paul Garrett twice got in behind the Hesketh Bank back line but dragged a shot wide and a pull back evaded everyone. Conor Wright, Jesse Dowling and Jordan Gregg once again all worked hard and tried to get an early goal. Hesketh Bank had a chance of their own as their Number 9 Smyth, saw a free header well held by Boden.
Hesketh Bank did take the lead before half time as Southport defended a corner but switched off from marking their men as the ball came back in and Smyth was left in marked to smash the Ball Home for a 0-1 lead at the break.
The second period started well again, this time Southport seemed to have penned Hesketh Bank in their own half. Jesse Dowling was then brought down by the Hesketh Bank full back in the area for a penalty. Conor Wright stepped up to continue his goal a game ratio, however saw his penalty saved well by the keeper. Frustrating as Southport kept working the Hesketh Bank back 4, they hit on the break, Dan birkby then lifted the ball over Boden to make it 2-0, debatably offside.
Smyth was then through again however a high foot as Boden went to claim the Ball ruled out a 3rd goal for Hesketh Bank who hit us with the long Ball which seemed the only was to be able to break us down. Joe Savin then pulled a goal back as Jesse swung in a cross which was met by Tom Hill who saw his header tipped onto the crossbar by the keeper for Joe Savin to Head in the rebound.
Chance after chance then came and Jack McCluskie then saw a speculative volley saved well by the keeper. A bit of controversy also as Smyth went through on goal, unbelievably dived past Boden to try and win his side a penalty, instead seein him booked by the Referee.
Full time 1-2 to Hesketh Bank.
Very frustrating game to watch from the side lines and Southport bopped the ball about well but couldn’t find an equaliser. Had the penalty gone in a 1 down, then maybe the result would’ve gone in Southports favour, however, until next time...
We not focus on Turton at home this weekend looking to bounce back with 3 points after 2 dissapointing results over the weekend.
