Lydney Town Blacks 3-4 Lions

Not only was this the first game back for the Lions after Lockdown 2, but it was without doubt their most physical encounter against a good Lydney team. The game was played in 3 x 15-minute periods and it was absolutely non-stop from the very first whistle!

The Lions team of Kristian, Noah S, Harrison, Henry, Tobias, Luke and Ed played extremely well and the team spirit that is growing between them is a delight to see!

The Lions fell behind quite early, but battled back with Henry netting a deserved equaliser to leave the scores at 1-1 at the end of the first period.

The second period continued with some great football from both sides and absolutely no quarter being given, as the parents that watched will testify! Lydney again took the lead, before the Lions fought back again with an equaliser from Luke. The score remained 2-2, partly thanks to a headed clearance off the line by Luke.

The third period continued in the same theme, but this time it was the Lions that took the lead with a lovely finish from Tobias. The end-to-end football continued with all the Lions running their socks off! With 5 minutes to go, Luke scored his second to give the Lions a cushion at 4-2 and was unlucky when his penalty, a few minutes later, clattered the crossbar. Typical of the match, Lydney then scored their third to ensure an exciting finish, but the Lions dug in and ran out deserving 4-3 winners.

Luke was awarded man of the match for his all-round play, headed goal line clearance and of course his two goals, but without doubt, any of the team could have won it this week!

I was immensely proud of all the boys as they played so well together and are becoming more of a team each week. There was some great passing and tackling from them all and they ran tirelessly for each other.

It was a long drive to Lydney, but it was certainly worth the journey!

Happy Christmas to all the Lions players and parents and see you all on Jan 9th for our next match!!!

Prestbury Phantoms Rovers 3-3 Leopards

The Leopards this week consisted of Caleb, George H, Noah L, Luke S, Freddie, Rafa and Harry.

Brilliant effort today from Southside Leopards. A thrilling 3-3 draw in a game that could have gone either way!!! Great performance from everyone on the pitch. A few mentions:

George - superstar and today was our VIRGIL at the back. Solid as a rock and some important tackles
Noah - tireless running up and down in midfield. Some fantastic skills and passes and took his goal well too
Caleb - made some brilliant and vital saves in goal. Some excellent kicking and never let his head down when a goal went past him
Freddie - at times today got stuck in and again looking for the easy passes. Took his second goal as well with aplomb and got us the point the team deserved

I could go on and on, I won’t bore you any further, but everyone in the team played their part in a great all-round display.

A huge well done to Noah for securing the Man of the Match.

I hope everyone has a brilliant Christmas and New Year and it was nice to be back on a football field! Up the Southside!!

Wildcats 13-3 Churchdown Panthers Orange

The Wildcats this week consisted of George B, Arlo, Josh, William, Tobey and Tom.

First game back for the Under 8 Wildcats at Newlands against the Churchdown Panthers Orange, who were playing their first ever game.

It was a fantastic team performance with the Wildcats running out very worthy 13-3 winners. The whole team played superbly, with special mentions to Tom and Tobey, who were making their debuts.

The team got off to a very fast start with an early goal from Josh followed by 4 in a row from Wills with some fearsome strikes. We then switched it round with Wills and then Josh coming off, then Wills taking over in goal for the rest of the first half. Further goals from Arlo, Tobey and 2 from George (one from near half-way) put us 9-0 up at the break.

We were already playing 5 versus 7, but we allowed the Panthers to bring on one further player to make it 5 v 8 for all of the second half. Arlo was keen to play in goal, so we switched again. It then became a real battle second half, with the Panthers managing to score three times, but further goals from Tobey, Wills and 2 from Josh completed the game at 13-3.

Great performances all round with 5 goals from Wills and some great saves, 3 goals from Josh and typical tough tackling, 2 superb strikes from George and great saves too, 2 goals on his debut for Tobey, and a goal and enthusiastic goalkeeping from Arlo, who loved his time in goal. Man of the Match though, for a great defensive display on his debut, was Tom, with strong and intelligent defence, which allowed everyone else to play further up the field

Huge thanks as always to Steve for arranging, Ash for a superb coaching performance and James too. Thanks to all the parents for cheering loudly and putting up the posts as well. Thanks to budding photographer Sam for his great pictures. Roll on the next games

Have a great Christmas all
