Goals from George Zuerner and Jamie Jackson gave the Tulips a win in their opening competitive match of the pre-season at Bourne Town on Wednesday.

Manager Matt Easton had 18 players involved and during the 90 minutes used them all.

Against a spirited home team the Tulips opted for what was essentially the strongest possible line-up for just more than an hour - Michael Duggan, Taron Hare, James Hugo, George Zuerner, Josh Spencer, Neal Spafford, Scott Floyd, Kegan Everington, Jamie Jackson, Jenk Acar and Charlie Hart.

They played some excellent passing football and largely dominated the Play, Acar and Jackson in particular formed a highly promising partnership up front, while new signing Josh Spencer slotted into the midfield alongside, Neal Spafford, Kegan Everington, Zuerner and Scott Floyd like a kid glove.

Zuerner’s 11th minute goal was a super strike from inside the box from one of Taron Hare’s long throws into the area. Goalkeeper Rory Eden denied Zuerner a second on 30 minutes, but was left in no man’s land when Jackson went on a weaving mission following an Acar assist on 34 minutes.

More chances came and went. The pattern of play and the high level of domination faded somewhat with the succession of substitutions, but all in all it was a satisfing night for all concerned, despite the consolation goal afforded to the Wakes’Tom Cardell in the 77th minute.

Among the Tulips’ substitutes were Dan Mason, Ross Bland, Ted Holliday and a couple of un-named triallists.
