Spartans R.F.C. History.

In 1927 Edwin White, the science master at the Crypt school started Spartans Rugby Club, and in their first season they chalked up 24 wins from 26 matches and also won the North Gloucestershire Combination Junior Cup.

In those days the club occupied a ground at Welwyn Lane, Barnwood, the secretary at the time Fred Merrett recalls the club upgraded to senior level in their second season and were beaten by Widden Old Boys in the Senior Combination Cup Final.

In the 1947-1948 season the club won the Combination Sevens and two consecutive wins gave them a hat trick of sevens and in 1951-1952 going for a Combination double, the Senior cup was lifted and the Junior Cup team lost in the final.

The Clubhouse at St. Catherines Meadow was opened in 1978 By Harold Robins (club president) and notable achievements to date include Gloucestershire County Champions in 1998, North Gloucestershire , Senior (5), Junior (4), and Challenge Cup (3) Cup final successes.

Spartans have also provided Gloucester R.F.C. with many great players and some have gone on to represent England, players such as, Phil Greening, Kev Dunn, Ryan Lamb and Dan Norton.

On the 15 January 2010 the club moved away from St. Catherine's Meadow to a new club house, about 200 metres away from the our old changing rooms at St Mark's parish hall, the former Y.M.C.A. building in Sebert St. in the heart of Kingsholm.
