New season, new players, new ideas, new optimism.
Spartans travelled to Chipping Sodbury RFC for the opening weekend of the Gloucestershire Premier league season and came away empty handed after an ill disciplined performance.
Both teams struggled to establish much continuity in their play which was made even worse by the enthusiastic blowing of the referees whistle. Spartans have a much younger squad this season, with many of the experience players of last season currently not available, and this will no doubt act as a huge learning curve for the remainder of the season.
Both teams had a man sent off after 5 minutes and this set the tone for the rest of the game. In addition Spartans had 4 players sinbinned whilst the hosts only had 2, which was probably the difference between the sides in the end.
Sodbury scored 2 well worked tries in the second half whilst the Ants managed a penalty try late in the game.
A tough afternoon for the young Ants but one they will definitely learn from.
