You’ve been at the club for a number of years now. What has been the main influence in you staying, and what is your personal ambition?
It’s a great club to be at. The people behind the scenes that you don’t see, put in so much work and it’s vital for us as players to be as professional as we can be. People like Magsy and Denise who are there week in week out, without fail making sure everything is done and prepared for when we arrive. A personal ambition is to try and stay injure free for a while and getting more goals and assist to my name.
Can you tell us a bit about your career history? What is your ultimate career goal?
I started playing football when I was 5 or 6, just for a local team called Spirit of Youth, and when I was 7 I was then scouted by Manchester United where I played at for 6-7 years..
Unfortunately, I dislocated my knee a couple of times and broke my collar bone so didn’t have the best of luck there. From there I went to Myerscough college and also played non league football for the first time when playing for Squires Gate at 17/18. I played at Gate for 5 years, and then went to play for Bamber Bridge for a year where I won the Intergo Cup, which is nice to win a trophy in non league. Again I dislocated my knee and came back to Squires Gate to get myself fit and I’ve never left. It’s a great club to be at, the managers I’ve played under have always supported me especially when I’ve been injured. Just before the season started this season I dislocated my knee again. Luke and Andy have been really supportive and the club have given me great physio to be able to get back playing again in the near future when the football gets back up and running.
An ultimate goal of this season would be to get Squires Gate promoted and be a big part of that, so whenever the season starts up I’ll be ready to give it 100%.
You have been out for the majority of the season, has it been frustrating not being able to get out and play? What do you do as your day job?
Yeah! It’s probably been the most frustrating time out of football I have had. The team hasn't had the start we were hoping for, but with this team you can never count us out, we have a great bunch of lads in the dressing room with great ability and we know that will be near the top when the season comes to a close! I’m back doing training now so I’m hoping after this phase of lockdown I’ll be back out on the pitch helping the team get the results and the points on the board!
I work in a vaping warehouse in the week, it’s a good job to have as it does adapt round my football when needed.
Can you talk us through your typical match day routine? Breakfast, pre match, preparation for games, etc?
I try to get up early on a match day get an early breakfast, normally it’s scrambled egg on toast and then I’ll have a cheese and ham toastie before I set off for the meeting time for the game. I wash my boots the morning of the match so I know they’re clean and make sure everything is ready and in my bag, I’ll watch soccer am and then go to the game. Usually have a cuppa tea whilst catching up with them and that’s it’s really, I usually put my right boot/sock on first and then my left... don’t ask me why I just always do it ?
Toughest player and team you have come up against in your career? Which players would you love to play against?
I played against Ross Barkley when I was younger, he was a unit even when he was 13/14! I would say one of the toughest game I’ve played in was against Preston in a pre season friendly. I felt I was just running for the entire game chasing players they’re so much awareness and are a lot sharper than the players you come up against in the North West Counties! I would love to play Premier League football as a professional and really test myself against the pro’s!
What is the most used app on your phone?
I would say WhatsApp, there is always a group chat going off!
What songs are on your pre match playlist? How do you get yourself pumped up for a game? Who has the worst music taste in the dressing room?
I don’t really have a playlist tbh, I will literally listen to anything except Pollard's songs. He listens to the most depressing music I’ve ever heard! The way I get pumped up for a game is to just think on my head I don’t want to let my team mates down and my manager down which then spurs me on to try and play the best I possible can do
What's your song choice on karaoke? What has been the best and worst initiations you've seen?
I don’t have a song on karaoke as I can’t sing. The best initiation I’ve seen was Joe Noblet, a few years back, he has a great voice! The worst one would have to be Tyler last season, he was awful but at least he did it!
Which 3 Football League players would you bring to the club on a free, and why?
Bradley Dack would be a great addition to the squad, he can do a bit of everything! Max Aarons would be a great full back for us getting up and down the wing and I would have to say Todd Cantwell, he has great technique and would give us something different in midfield defensively and when we’re attacking.
If the entire squad was in the jungle. Who would be most likely to back out of doing tasks? Who would be ready for the challenge?
Cam would back out of doing the trials he backs out of tackles in a game ? I think Luke Holden and Doddy would be up for the challenge of the trials!
What restaurant can you usually be found in? Or are you more of a takeaway sort of guy?
I do love a takeaway every now and again but I do love going out for a meal with the missus. One of my favourite restaurants is Fazenda in Manchester, all you can eat is my sort of thing!
What are the fines like at Gate? Whats the worst fine you've received in your time, and who is the main culprit for racking up the most of them?
I started to do the fines this season with Doddy and we’re very strict, we’ve got a lot in the kitty compared to last season! The worst fine I’ve had was going away in the season cost me a couple of notes! The main culprit this season for dirty boots is Westy but he loves giving that £2 every week!
If you were to pick 3 other players to go on The Chase with you, who would you pick and who would you least rely on?
I would be Sam, Westy and Boydy, they seem to have the head screwed on and I know they would give it there best shot! I wouldn’t take Dean on the chase he’s got a bit of an empty head.
Favourite sport aside from football? Do you enjoy watching or playing any other sports?
I love playing golf, I’m a fair weather golfer though don’t like playing in the rain! I like watching/playing other sports I’m one of those annoying people that can kind of play every sport!
Are you more of a film or box set sort of guy? What is your go to binge series?
I’m more of a film guy to be honest, I like anything to be fair, I do like an action like your Die Hard films and things like that. I did get into Power and got really addicted to it and watched it all within a couple of weeks!
When we eventually get back to some normality, what will be the first thing you will be doing?
I’ll be booking a holiday somewhere hot for sure and then it will be a night out with my pals be good to actually see them and have a good laugh after everything that has happened during this pandemic.
