It was raining goals at The Skiddle Community Stadium as Gate scored twice in three minutes to come from behind and beat Maghull 2-1.
In a game where the weather made conditions tough for both teams, goals from Vani Da Silva and Dean Ing were enough to secure three points late on for the hosts.
Kevin Zokou was on hand to make a fantastic block to deny the visitors, who looked dangerous early on, after Levi Adebisi put a dangerous ball in for the away side with 15 minutes played.
Gate grew into the game though with Dean Ing proving a handful for the opposing backline. The Blues number ten had a dangerous run and cross down the right flank finding Scott Harries in the middle, whose effort stung the palms of the Maghull number one Luke Riley.
Gate’s striker threatened again with 30 minutes played, as his attempted dink in the visitor’s box forced the keeper into action.
The away side’s best chance of the first half came a minute later as Josh Taylor denied Conor Rankin from close range.
There was plenty of moisture in the air but the goals had dried up in the first 45’ of the League encounter.
Conditions significantly worsened after the break with torrential rain and wind proving a challenge for both sides.
With just over 50 minutes played, Jacob Till went close for the side from Merseyside, as his effort flew just wide of the post.
Squires Gate applied sustained pressure with a series of corners as the second half progressed however the visitors, in their yellow strip, weren’t necessarily troubled.
It was the away side who opened the scoring through Will Hoey who managed to squeeze the bouncing ball in following the corner, with 20 minutes left to play.
Vani Da Silva levelled up for the hosts just seven minutes later with a composed finish to poke it past the onrushing goalkeeper after a pinpoint ball in behind from Will Squires.
The goals continued to pour in as Dean Ing scored Gate’s second goal in three minutes to put the Blues 2-1 up. Squires Gate’s top goal scorer dispatched the penalty, won after Riley was brought down in the box, taking his tally to nine goals for the campaign.
Da Silva looked to extend the advantage late on but his effort went just wide of the goal.
After a spirited comeback, Squires Gate will travel to Bacup Borough on Wednesday in their next League encounter.
