Back in August, England's biggest cup competition started it's extra preliminary round. 736 teams entered, and only 8 remain going into this weekend's quarter finals. To celebrate the famous competitions restart, we ask some of our fans, committee and players what their favourite ever game from the competition is.
Gate in the FA Cup
Squires Gate start each season in the extra preliminary round of the competition, which is 6 rounds away from the 1st round proper, where football league teams begin to enter. The furthest Gate have got in the competition is the 2nd Qualifying Round, firstly back in 2001 and then most recently in 2004. Our most recent FA Cup game this season, ended in a 2-1 defeat to West Didsbury. Here is how our most successful campaigns went:
2001-02 FA Cup
Prelim Round: Squires Gate 2-0 Oldham Town
1st Qualifying Round: Squires Gate 3-2 Ossett Town
2nd Qualifying Round: Squires Gate 2-2 Bedlington Terriers
2nd Qualifying Round Replay: Bedlington Terriers 4-0 Squires Gate
2004-05 FA Cup
Preliminary Round: Abbey Hey 0-1 Squires Gate
1st Qualifying Round: Trafford 1-2 Squires Gate
2nd Qualifying Round: Braford Park Avenue 2-1 Squires Gate
My favourite FA Cup game is...
Alan Davis (Supporter):It sure as hell wasn't the semi final last season. Probably the first match I ever saw at Wolves was vs Bristol City, FA Cup 4th round 1973. At that time, we only had a black and white TV, so it was the first time I saw the ground in colour. I still remember it now and my first hero, John Richards scored the winner. As a young lad, it seemed unreal.
Sam Staunton Turner (Captain):It has to be watching the 2009 semi-final when Everton played Manchester United at Wembley and Everton won 4-2 on penalties. That was unbelievable.
Darren Ing (Supporter): Obviously as a Blackpool fan, I am going to say 1953 but for a game that stands out for me as soon as you asked, would be Crystal Palace v Liverpool semi final in 1990, Liverpool's last league win before this year had been wrapped up and were marching onto to do the double having beaten Palace in the league 9-0 earlier in the season. Their final place, many thought had already been assured but a real ding dong game with both teams leading, then going to extra time when Alan Pardew - ex Palace and Newcastle manager - put Crystal Palace into the cup final.
Kevin Waite (Supporter): I'm showing my age here! I used to watch Darlington quite a bit when I was younger. They had played Middlesbrough on the Saturday and held them to a 0-0 draw and the replay was on the Tuesday at Darlington. Darlo were in the old Fourth Division at the time and Boro were in the Second. 14,500 (probably more) were packed into Feethams. Darlo won 2-1 with the goals coming from two ex Boro players. Best game and atmosphere I have ever been to. Typical Darlo got beat off Telford in the next round, who went on to play Everton at Goodison in the following round!
Harry Davies (Supporter): West Didsbury 2-3 Squires Gate, in 2018.
John Hayden (Supporter): Watford 3-2 Wolves, last years semi final.
