Stafford Wasps top the table after a competitive tournament in Penkridge.

Twenty members from Stafford rugby club took the short trip to Penkridge last Friday night for the second tournament of the South Staffordshire touch series. The regulars from the Wednesday night mixed touch rugby combined with members of the ladies Friday night touch rugby to form two formidable teams the Stafford Wasps & Bees. The players settled into the tournament to take on twelve other teams from Cannock, Eccleshall, Essington, Rugeley, Walsall, Wheaton Aston and Penkridge.

The weather rained itself out just prior to the first game leaving behind a warm & dry evening to form the backdrop for a competitive series of games. Both teams put in some strong shifts, especially the ladies compliment showcasing their skills by carrying some hard yards in attack and menacing any unfortunate members of the opposition who stepped within striking distance in defence. Special mention must go to Gavin Hogan for the try of the night as he rose like a leaping salmon to snatch a spiraling ball out of the air and completed the arching dive by crashing across the line to bring us back into contention.
The evening ended in victory for Stafford Wasps as they topped the table taking first place. Stafford Bees finished a creditable fourth only two points behind Wasps. A huge thank you to all players that turned out to make it a fun packed evening. Also mentioned in dispatches are Darren Roe, James van Nijkerk & Richard Baker who not only played but took turns as the referee throughout the night.
