As the rain comes down on a cold October weekend it feels a lot longer ago than the few short weeks it has been since we pulled stumps on the 2020 juniors season but its worth a few short words.
This year was of course a year of significant challenge across junior cricket due to the coronavirus pandemic. Pre-season training was curtailed just after we started our indoor nets and we were unfortunately unable to offer any form of training through the traditional busy months of April and May. We were gradually able to offer one to one net sessions and small group training but it wasn't until July, a time of year when we would normally be finishing league fixtures, that we were able to get out playing properly. Despite everything though the level of interest and enthusiasm we had across the club was fantastic and we managed to pack in a lot of cricket and a lot of fun in just over two months.
Both our Under 13 and Under 10 sides managed a good number of locally organised fixtures and we even managed an introductory softball game for our Under 9s as well as four weeks of AllStar cricket for next seasons future club sign ups.
Our Under 13s played their first year of proper "out when out" matches, winning 2 and losing 4, with one a possible last ball tie depending on scorers interpretation! Some real progress and im sure it will not be long before some of these young men are knocking on the door of senior cricket. Our Under 10s managed 7 games in their first hard ball season. Winning 4 and losing 3, one of which was a last ball thriller, a really strong performance which bodes well for the future. We capped the season with two Parents v Kids games on the 6th September, both matches ending in improbable ties, a tremendous turn out from players and spectators in the sun. A really great club day.
Encouragingly player numbers were up on last year once again even within the existing groups and with another age group joining we continue to see this side of the club develop. Next season we plan to run Teams at U14, U12, U11 and U10 (softball) so continued growth and hopefully even more regular league matches.
Thanks to everyone involved this season, the support from parents and helpers was tremendous and is critical to our onward growth. Look out for notices on off season social events, Winter nets in the new year and further communication on next season.
