A tough match as our Under 13s went down to Hampton Wick Royal in the gloom. HW were a strong side comprised fully of 13 year olds against our mixed 11-13 year old group which was also a player short due to last minute injury. That experience told in a rather sloppy start from our lads in a gloomy atmosphere which threatened rain throughout the game. HW were 88 without loss after 10 before Staines showing a little more of what they can offer to limit the opposition to 151 off their 20, a much improved Rory taking 1 for 9 off his 3 and debutant Ameya chipping in with 1 for 9 off 2. Staines reply was soon in trouble with Riley caught at short mid wicket fending off a bouncing ball rearing up off the used pitch. Joe and Connor battled hard against tight, disciplined bowling with well drilled fielders putting on 65 for the second wicket but always falling further behind the rate as runs proved hard to come by. With 5 overs left and with the game gone Joe took a chance and was out caught for 26, the first time he has been dismissed all season, another superb effort. Connor retired not out shortly after to give others a brief chance at the wicket before the match concluded in defeat. The mixed levels of friendly competition this season perhaps proving too great a challenge for our lads on this occasion but the game provided our team with the opportunity to see what they need to do to improve next season.
