Sponsors Spotlight

In this week's edition, we catch up with Nick Hardy, St Albans Depot Manager at George Davies Turf Ltd to find out more about the work that they do and the challenges of the last year:

When was the company founded?
Founded in 2001

What do you do?
George Davies Turf Ltd are the largest independent turf supplier in the country selling in excess of 1 million rolls of turf a year. Operating out of two depots, St Albans and Bedford we pride ourselves on offering outstanding customer service to our base of trade, domestic, garden centre and golf course clients.
Deliveries are made using our own vehicles that have on board forklifts enabling us to get the turf exactly where the customer needs it (as long as access allows) not just left at the kerbside. Each delivery is give a 2 hour time-slot so you are also not having to wait around all day.

We sell a range of other products including various BS certified topsoil to meet the requirements of planting, raised beds, improving soil fertility and filling in holes. Bark for borders, Play Bark for recreational play areas, sleepers, lawn seed & fertilisers to maintain healthy lawns. We also sell a range of Artificial Turf to suit every budget that is cut to the customers’ requirements. We are also a Premier Distributor of Millboard composite decking and cladding that offers a long lasting (25year warranty), low maintenance alternative to wooden decking/cladding. It won’t rot or warp, is resistant to algae growth and has a very high anti slip ratio so can be used all year round.

Number of employees ?
16 employees, dedicated to ensuring the customer journey is a smooth as possible.

What challenges have you experienced over the last year?
When the initial lock-down was introduced like many businesses we were very unsure if we were still able to trade. We lost staff to shielding and self-isolating but we were very much one of the lucky businesses that were still able to carry on supplying to our customers, for which we are truly thankful. We initially stopped customer collections from our depots, only doing deliveries in line with Covid restrictions and doing everything we could to protect our staff and our customers. We have also been very lucky to have had continual supply of products from our suppliers so have been able to carry on supplying our customer base with the materials they need for them to be able to carry on working. We are continuing to operate within the regulations, offering social distanced deliveries and collections, a skeleton staff in the depots with the rest working from home. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to work in an industry where its customer base is predominately based outside so we can continue to trade in this very turbulent time.

Why did you get involved with St Albans Rugby Club?
We always try and support our local community where ever possible. Health and fitness is also at the heart of the business so when we were contacted by Fraser it was a "no brainer" for us, especially with George the owner being a big rugby fan! We are very proud of our relationship with St Albans Rugby Club and we can’t wait to get back to some sort of normality so we can get down to cheer them on.
