Saints put together a workmanlike display to ease past a lack lustre Hitchin side.

St. Albans bid farewell to a cold January with a competent showing that saw them overcome a ponderous Hitchin side 25 - 7.

Saints looked bright from the outset and took the game to the visitors, but in the early stages they found it difficult to make headway against solid Hitchin defence. Within the first quarter St. Albans had to reorganise their back line when they lost fly-half, Chris Jones to an arm injury, with Ollie Fountain then taking on the #10 role.

The home side kept up the pressure a were rewarded with a Harrison Wells penalty following a Hitchin transgression. Just on 30 minutes Saints then scored a well worked try with the ball going the length of the back line before Sean Phimister-Tribbick (aka "Treacle") outpaced to defence to touch-down close to the posts. The conversion was added to give St. Albans a 10 point lead.

Hitchin then set about trying to get back into the game and only resolute Saints defence kept them from scoring, the first half came to an end with the home teams 10 - 0 lead still intact.

St. Albans started the second half with a period of pressure, Hitchin were penalised close to their line and Saints skipper Brent Lemiere elected to take the scrum, the forwards responded magnificently and drove the opposition backwards with #8 Joe Shaw touching down for the try of the game.

Saints then lost prop Mike Bennet to a "yellow card" offence and the visitors took their opportunity to score a try close to the posts which was duly converted. Hitchin now had a stake in the game with the score at 15 - 7.

The home side kept there composure with scrum-half Harrison Wells putting in some excellent kicks to relieve any pressure, Saints tackling was determined and Ollie Fountain always caused to visitors problems with his direct and aggressive running.

With Bennet reinstated to the field St. Albans forwards began to boss the opposition, from a passage of play that saw forward momentum drive Hitchin close to their own line, the powerful Joe Shaw crashed over to bag his second try of the day.

St. Albans carried on in the ascendancy and got their just desserts when following a long Ollie Fountain pass, SP-T "Treacle" again outpaced the cover defence and closed the game out at 25 - 7.

It was a fine display from St. Albans which will stand them in good stead when they travel to Cheshunt in their next League fixture on the 11th February.
