St. Albans score eight tries to two as they overwhelm Vees.

St. Albans RFC travelled across town to near neighbours Verulamians for their last league fixture of 2019.

As local derbies go this was one that will not be long remembered, but it did show why the sides sit where they do in the league.

On a cold afternoon with a strong breeze blowing across the pitch it took a while for the teams to adjust to the heavy conditions. St. Albans forwards showed why they are such a potent force in this league as they started to boss V’s in the set play.

On twenty minutes, a scrum close to V’s line saw a big Saints push and pick up by Syd Noad for the opening score. Ten minutes later winger Fraser Morris found himself in space and raced through to add another try.

Just before half time Andy Sinton was the beneficiary of St. Albans pack power when he was able to dart over following another dominant scrum. George Elliott added the conversion.

At the break St. Albans looked comfortable without really getting out of first gear.

Saints resumed the scoring when Joe Seymour cut through the V’s defence to increase their lead to 0 – 22.

The match then became somewhat fractured as injuries and the referee’s intervention stalled what limited flow there was to the game.

Despite this Mickey Seymour kept the Saints back division moving and from a smart move winger Andy Sinton bagged his second try that George Elliott then converted.

St. Albans must have thought they’d done enough but a lapse in concentration allowed V’s to open their account with a deserved try.

Saints were stung back into action and just to show they meant business prop Liam Rogers steamed though the home defence for a great individual try that was converted.

With the cold now chilling the spectator’s bones St. Albans George Elliott attempted to warm things up as he added a try and then the conversion.
But V’s were not going to lie down and another spirited surge saw them race back up the pitch to claim their second converted try.

The game went back to being disjointed as interruptions and the conditions took their toll.

Finally, it was almost an act of kindness when George Elliott scored his second try of the day and gave St. Albans a deserved, if not memorable, victory and allow everybody to return to the warmth of the clubhouse.

Final score: Verulamians 14 vs St. Albans 46.

Saints next fixture is early in the new year when on the 4th January they take an away day journey to Canvey Island for a Cup game.

From all of us at St. Albans RFC may we wish you a very Happy Christmas and peaceful New Year.
