On a chill February afternoon St. Albans travelled to North London for a clash with old rivals Hampstead in LNW2.
St. Albans kicked off playing up the hill, always a testing factor when playing on the Hampstead Heath pitch. For the first half hour both sides struggled to put together any fluency in their play as they strove to find potential weakness. Two penalties to the home side and one to the visitors had the score at 6 - 3 on thirty minutes.
Saint's then started to move the ball with more intent and after a extend period of play involving both backs and forwards managed to cross the Hampstead line with Nick Hegarty getting his first try for the club. The conversion was missed but St. Albans seemed confident in their abilities and maintained their momentum. Another penalty chance came just before half time, but without their regular goal kicker the opportunity was missed. The whistle blew for the end of the half with Saint's just in front at 6 - 8 and the prospect of playing down the hill at the restart.
From the outset of the second half Saint's knew where they wanted to play to game, and a series of long kicks put them deep into Hampstead territory. The home side were pinned down as St. Albans keep up the pressure and from a Hampstead scrum close to their goal-line, Saint's took the ball against the head and marched over for a forwards try. The conversion attempt was missed but the visitors now had a 6 - 13 advantage.
What happened next is difficult to understand as St. Albans seemed to loose all their composure and authority and allowed Hampstead back into the game. The home side expanded their play and started running with conviction and supporting each other well, St. Albans on the other hand seemed to loose the plot completely as Hampstead then ran in five tries without reply. Final score, Hampstead 39 - St Albans 13.
It was a disappointing end following on from a series of games in which St. Albans had shown real improvement, they now have to get act together for the visit of League leaders Harrow to Boggymead in two weeks time.
