With a spare weekend in the league calendar, St Albans 1st XV had the day off in readiness for the forthcoming home promotion clash with Barnet Elizabethans on 21st March.
The club however was open, and hosted the University of Hertfordshire (UoH) women’s and men’s 1st XVs who played past students in aid of charity. Great rugby and sportsmanship were evident in two excellent matches watched by a crowd of around 100 students and St Albans supporters, followed by the usual St Albans RFC hospitality in the clubhouse afterwards. A great advert for the fantastic relationship St Albans RFC have established with UoH rugby!
With the 1st XV not playing it was therefore down to a combined 2/3s to play a last minute arranged match against local rivals Welwyn XV. The match started well for St Albans who’s superiority soon became apparent with 5 first half tries (Fraser Morris (2), Toby Sweeney (2) and Dan Satchell) with 4 conversions from Harry McKay leaving the home side trailing 0:33 at half time. The second half was much more closely contested with several changes made by both sides. Welwyn managed to score a solitary try resulting in a final score of 5:33 with spoils going to a well drilled and confident St Albans RFC.
The club looks forward to hosting Barnet Elizabethans RFC next weekend in what will be a hugely contested match (2nd and 3rd positions in the league) and for the Mark Trude Trophy pre-ceded by a club members luncheon. We look forward to massive support for the boys.
