St Albans put on a great display in the wet and changing conditions and nilled the league leaders, Welwyn. The miserable weather could not dampen the spirit of the team from Boggymead and they kept on the front foot throughout. Attacking rugby was the form for the day and time and again, St Albans pressured the opposition with incisive running and determined tackling. Flanker Ryan Wallis went over in the corner for the opening score. The move came from a drive to the line that was held up but the quick rucking and three deft passes put the plucky youngster in space and a dive to beat his man secured the score. 5 - 0
This confirmed what the rest of the St Albans output for the afternoon would be - Action!
Chris Hilton tagged onto a kick upfield from Neil Gallagher and he grubbered the ball ahead. Sadly the dead ball line was just too close so his touchdown was just outside. Although the try was not scored it gave all the ammunition St Albans needed to keep playing in such a way. Welwyn went down to 14 men for ten minutes as their fly half was deemed to have committed a professional foul and the St Albans team kept mounting on the pressure. A scrum in front of the posts allowed for a no.8 pick up and Darren was over for a classy individual score. 12 - 0 HT
Mark Davies told his men that no words were needed at all as everyone knew instinctively what type of game they wanted the second half to be and the boys didn't let him down.
More and more attacks were made and eventually a try was going to be the outcome. Doug Morete, back from injury crashed over to take the lead up to 19-0.
St Albans were to save the best till last as from the restart Saj Fernando, back from a long injury himself AND playing out of position at second row (he's normally a centre!) caught the ball at full charge and made his way upfield breaking through tackles to get to the opposition 22 and then deliver a sweet pass to Chris Hilton at full tilt. A GREAT SCORE! 24 -0
If Welwyn had thoughts of a comeback then they were to come to nought as the St Albans tackling was resolute. The whole day was what we as a team had worked so hard this season and last for. Lots of people out of position or in new positions for the first time and yet ALL were up for the challenge.
THANK YOU!
