The youngest of the Junior Daniels have had a great start to their professional careers.

Less than a year ago some of these 6/7 year olds had never played football, never met each other and hadn’t been brought together as a team. In May 2018 our squad of juniors started by attending the Saturday morning club as did many others. A maximum squad size of 10 would then continue their football journey in the Peterborough and District Junior Alliance U7s Development zone, for the 2018/19 season. The season has been all about development of the players.

In the U7s we’ve tried to focus our approach on providing rotation of positions, giving each of our players the opportunity to develop in all aspects of the game, although goalkeeping is not always a favourite choice, neither is defence for those who want to score goals, or having their time on the bench, but they’ve all done their fair share and as a result have really gelled as a team. As coaches we’ve maintained positive messages (we hope), you can see the effect on a player’s demeanour when they do not get this and how negatives can really breed an element of self-doubt. This has helped achieve the ultimate goal of everybody having fun. After ever game no matter what the outcome they’ve always had a smile on their faces and are always sporting with the opposition. They all come from a range of schools around Stamford and Rutland and it’s great to see how they all interact together and have such great team spirit.

This has been a terrific first season that started out with a 6-6 draw away at Pinchbeck, some close fought local derby’s, tough away games around Peterborough and Spalding and great team performances at home where we remain unbeaten. For those who like a stat: Played 24, Lost 3, Drawn 4, Goals for 124, Goals against 58, its certainly been an entertaining season.

In December we took the team to Wreake Valley Academy to play three teams from around Leicester, the boys had tremendous fun and thoroughly enjoyed the adventure. When scoping out the opposition warming up upon arrival all the teams looked extremely well organised (not saying we aren’t) but we got the feeling it could be a tough night, however the boys were terrific and we emerged victorious in all three games.

It really has been a fantastic first season, we’ve seen some terrific goals, goals from the halfway line, volleys, team goals, great passing, assists, solid defensive performances, last ditch sliding tackles, defensive awareness, tremendous saves from our goalkeepers particularly in close games when called upon, great teamwork and not forgetting the roller coaster of emotions it’s been for our fantastic parents and supporters who have turned out twice a week in all weather.

We now have a small break before Saturday morning club starts and continuing to have fun at the 5 Tournaments coming up in May and June.
