Stamford travelled to Cambridge to secure a valuable win to keep pace with front runners.

After securing a place in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday the Daniels returned to league action against Cambridge City.

Stamford were without Sean Wright and Cameron Johnson for the trip but new signing Zayn Hakeem made his debut after joining from Worksop Town.

After conceding early goals in recent games, Stamford started on the front foot and Hakeem had a shot which was saved by Dan George in the Cambridge goal. This was following by an effort by James Blunden but his shot was wide of the goal.

The home side had their first chance on sixteen minutes when Jarid Robson put his shot wide of the Daniels goal.

Then Stamford had an opportunity to open the scoring when Connor Bartle crossed from the left for Hakeem but the new Daniels recruit failed to connect when free in the penalty area. Tendai Chitiza then had a shot after good build up play but his shot was blocked at the expense of a corner.

Just before half time, Stamford thought they had scored when Jack Duffy slotted the ball into the net but he was adjudged to be offside.

Early in the second half, Cambridge City when a shot was deflected which Dan Wallis did well to tip over for a corner.

The Daniels opened the scoring on 58 minutes when Stamford were awarded a free kick for a foul on Cosmos Matwasa. Connor Bartle stepped the ball and fired the shot towards the back post and the home goalkeeper misjudged the flight of the ball and it went in off the far post.

With twenty minutes remaining, Michael Frew replaced Hakeem and within a minute he almost scored when passed the ball by Joe Butterworth but his shot was pushed away for a corner. From the resultant set piece, the ball came out to fellow substitute Jake Duffy to fire home through a crowd of players for him to score his second goal for Stamford since his return to the club.

Frew then had another opportunity to score after a cross from Matwasa but his header was straight at George in the home goal.Cambridge then had a chance to get a goal back when a long range shot tried to catch Wallis off his line, but the Stamford stopper managed to back track to make an easy save.

They grabbed a consolation deep into injury time when a shot struck Stacey Freeman to direct the ball past Wallis and into the net.
