Stamford bowed out of this season’s league cup with a 3-1 defeat the first division side Carlton Town.

There were five changes to the starting line-up due to a combination of injuries and players being cup-tied.

Stamford started the brighter and on four minutes, Chris Bacon raced clear of the visiting defence but his shot hit the side netting. A few minutes later Jack Wightwick crossed the ball out to Chris Hamilton and his pass was met by Jordan Smith but the shot was straight at Jack Steggles in the Carlton goal.

Wightwick then had a chance as he found himself behind the Carlton rearline but again Steggles blocked the shot and the follow up shot from James Jepson was cleared for a corner. Then the Daniels were gifted a great chance when a stray back pass went straight to Bacon who passed to Smith and his fierce shot his the far post.

As the half hour marked approached, the Daniels found themselves a goal behind. A cross from the right found its way to Josh Rae who was unmarked in the box for him to score past Jonathan Hedge from close range.

Stamford almost levelled straightaway when a free-kick was whipped in from the right and this was met by Smith and his header struck the crossbar.

In the second half, Stamford started on the front foot. Half time substitute Jake Duffy crossed the ball to Hamilton who whipped the ball into Chris Bacon but the Daniels forward placed his header wide of the post.

After five minutes of the half, the Daniels were level. Stamford were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box. Duffy swung the ball in and Paul Malone met the ball and headed the ball into the net.

The visitors were back in front fifteen minutes later. Left back Daniel Fletcher advanced forward and struck a strong shot that swerved in the air and beat Hedge at his near post. Stamford tried to respond straight away but Sam Hill’s shot was blocked.

Carlton then had a shot which just clipped the crossbar following a mazy run across the eighteen yard box.

With eleven minutes remaining, Carlton scored the best goal of the night. Fletcher flicked the ball to Daniel Gordon and he volleyed the ball into the top corner of the goal.
