Stamford bowed out of this seasons FA cup at the first hurdle. Writes Stephen Breden.

Seven minutes into the first half and the first chance of the game came to the visitors as Joe Burgess met a deep Ben George cross but put his header just wide. Burgess was again involved a few minutes later as he played the ball to Jordan Smith who shot well wide.

On the 18th minute Cambridge had their first chance of the game as Lewis Wilson was in on goal but Dan Haystead saved comfortably. A minute later Elliot Sandy shot from range but this went well over.

A minute later a fierce Joe Burgess shot from range was saved by the Cambridge keeper. On the 35th minute the injured Elliot Sandy was replaced by Sam Hollis. Three minutes before the break there was a goal mouth scramble, with Jake Duffy unable to get a shot away before Jordan Smith only being able to shoot straight at a defender.

In stoppage time of the first half there was a chance for both sides. First of all Ben Robinson had his shot easily saved by Dan Haystead then Jake Duffy received the ball from Jordan Smith but his shot was straight at the keeper.

A minute after the break a powerful shot by Joe Burgess was saved by Niall Conroy. On the 62nd minute an Elliot Putman cross found Jordan Smith, his header was well saved but the referee deemed that he had fouled the Cambridge defender. With twenty minutes to go John King replaced Joe Burgess.

Five minutes later Mike Armstrong was sent off in a moment that changed the game. He lunged in with a heavy tackle and despite winning the ball he was given his marching orders.

Two minutes later Cambridge’s Salim Relizani was in on goal forcing a great save out of Dan Haystead. Four minutes later Rob Morgan forced a great save out of the Cambridge keeper with his sliced volley. With three minutes to go Cambridge got the decisive goal. A cross from the right found Relizani who headed past Haystead, who conceded his first goal of the season.

The final few minutes saw Stamford try to force an equalizer with a Delroy Gordon shot being saved and a Jake Duffy free-kick, which many people through should have been a penalty, was headed over his own bar by a Cambridge defender.
